Main Purpose & Function

  • Support the Sanitation Services Branch with ongoing vehicle route creation and updates. Ongoing tasks include the development and revision of route (beat) maps, generating vehicle routes to respond to ongoing operational changes, and ground truth information with subject matter experts
  • Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data visualization best practices to communicate changes (for example ESRI Storymaps and Operational Dashboards)
  • Generate vehicle routes using geospatial data entry by entering, compiling, and editing spatial, geographic and associated non-graphic data into various City of Vancouver databases

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Illustrate current service patterns and gaps on city maps and generate multimedia visualizations
  • Create, update and optimize route/beat maps
  • Work day-to-day with supervisors and front line staff to provide timely route/beat maps to support service trials and regular operations
  • Identify possible mapping related synergies between Street Cleaning and Collections
  • Support Sanitation Branch with general mapping needs, as required

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by courses in geographic information systems (GIS) with sound related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experience (eg: ArcGIS Pro)
  • Reporting & Data Visualization (eg. Excel pivot tables, graphs, maps, status report)
  • Database Management and Administration (eg: SQL Server, Oracle, Access)
  • Data entry experience
  • Reporting and Data
  • Hansen & Lagan Awareness

The following is important but not essential:

  • Municipal‎ Operations Experience‎ (able to work in fast paced and rapidly changing work area)
  • Fleet Route planning

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.


The City’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
